JACK DOHALLOW
Turned and Constructed Wood Art

In the beginning, first picking up some turning tools in 1975, Jack primarily created candle sticks,
candle holders and small bowls using simple designs to bring out the natural beauty of local timber.
Each piece of timber being a mystery before being turned.   In time, a relationship develops
between artist and the soul of the wood itself.   These early original pieces were given as presents to
family, friends or sold at shows and flea markets.

An opportunity came for Jack to take a position as a production wood-turner, sometimes turning
more than 100 bowls a day.   When the business started to close down, and with his years of
production turning behind him, Jack went in a new direction too.   His work is now more of an
exploration of line and forms, trying to achive that perfect place between artist and medium.

Jack's desire to create specific design using a technique called Polychromatic-Segmented Turning
has led him into the world of open-segmented turning.   These pieces are similar to traditional
segmented turning except there are gaps between each pieces of wood.   They require an entirely
new process!   The project has to be built piece-by-piece on the lathe, with each layer taking a full
day for glue up and cure time.

Jack's latest experiments are offsetting the wood in the lathe and turning on different centers,
sometimes two centers, or as many as sixteen different centers, creating a unique and different look.

Born in Ohio in 1958, Jack now lives in the foothills east of Sacramento with his wife Sylvia.   Jack's
other creative interests include photography and writing.   Traveling extensively in their RV throughout
North America, Jack describes those adventures as having a significant influence on his wood art.
